Julia Louis-Dreyfus Talks About The Upcoming Marvel's Thunderbolts Shoot & Her Character

Outsiders - January 17, 2023
After being introduced in numerous credit scenes and cameos in Marvel films, Val the Contessa, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, last appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where we learned she was named director of the CIA.

Starting this June, Louis-Dreyfus tells Variety that she will start shooting Thunderbolts, which sets her strongest outing to date.

The plot has been described by Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige as the tale of a “rag-tag bunch” of unincorporated superheroes, including Florence Pugh’s Yelena Bolova and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes. Wyatt Russell will be returning as the character U.S. Agent; David Harbour reprising his “Black Widow” role of Red Guardian; Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster; Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost; and Harrison Ford, making his Marvel debut, as Thaddeous Ross.

With this film, Louis-Dreyfus is looking to finally get into the action. “I actually pitched it,” Louis-Dreyfus said, “I told them I really, really want to fight. We’ll see if that happens. I haven’t seen the script yet.” When reminded about Marvel’s intense stunt training, she reluctantly agreed, “Ugh. I’d better get in shape.”

Marvel production executive Nate Moore teased that her character will emerge as the MCU’s most formidable behind-the-scenes leader since Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

“There’s so much secrecy around it,” Louis-Dreyfus told Variety of the gig, “when I first started shooting it I had to go set wearing a black cloak with a hood and keep my head down so nobody could see it was me walking onto the soundstage.”

Louis-Dreyfus has even found ways of making the character into her own by changing the look and style. “In the original comic she has sort of a white streak in her hair, but I thought purple would make it a little more of this world today,” the actor said of the neon streak the Contessa rocks in her hair. “And I didn’t want o her to look too much like Cruella, or anything like that.”

Thunderbolts is scheduled to open on July 26th, 2024.

While I was pleased to see Valentina Allegra appear on screen, and I do love Julia, she isn't who I would have chosen for the role. Its odd that they (american movie studios) use so many foreign actors for these gigs, and then when the character really should be from another country, they use an American.

A big part of the reason for hiring actors from other countries for American roles in big studio movies is that most of them aren't SAG-AFTRA members, and studios can pay them less than the negotiated minimum salaries. I don't believe it works the other way around, so that one is harder to explain. But often the actor is someone like Peter Dinklage, who the producers are super happy to bring onto a project and/or the director has been hoping to work with for years.

Also the purple streak she's using instead of the white, really doesn't look right for her age. But hey, in this MCU version she's a different person so it is what it is.

Though there hasn't been that much of her, I'm enjoying her character so far. I liked the interplay with Ross Jr. in Black Panther 2. She obviously has an agenda. I'm assuming Hydra is involved in some capacity. I don't believe for a second that group is defunct.

Same, I half expect her to break into that jerky kicking thumb-pointing dance move every time shes on screen.

I think she is so far doing a fine job as Val, but I sorta feel like she's a bit too old to be doing action scenes, but whatever, I also have a hard time not seeing Julia as Elaine, and I'm not sure I'll ever get over that.
