The Final Battle In Jason Aaron's Epic Avengers Run Begins

The Final Battle In Jason Aaron's Epic Avengers Run Begins

Jay Cochran - December 01, 2022
Yesterday, comic readers witnessed the opening of the biggest Avengers story in Marvel Comics history in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE ALPHA #1! The one-shot kicked off a monumental saga that will serve as the capstone to Jason Aaron’s nearly five-year run on Avengers and run through upcoming issues of Aaron’s two Avengers titles, AVENGERS and AVENGERS FOREVER. Joined by superstar artists Bryan Hitch, Javier Garrón, and Aaron Kuder, the visionary comic writer has crafted a story so massive in scope that it may very well shatter the Avengers mythos!

Tying together plot threads from throughout Aaron’s run, AVENGERS ASSEMBLE is 10-part showdown at the edge of reality between an army of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the evilest forces in the multiverse. Read on to learn what awaits in March’s installments of AVENGERS ASSMBLE which will present some of the final battles in this epic war, filled with heartbreaking defeats, legendary victories, and character-defining feats beyond imagination!

At Infinity’s End stands Avengers Tower which has fallen under assault by the ultimate forces of evil including the Multiversal Masters of Evil and Mephisto. The Avengers that fans know and love will unite with heroes from the past, future, and far reaches of the multiverse to defend Avengers Tower and the fate of Marvel history as we know it. Can they work together? And will their power be enough to prevent the end of all that is?

In AVENGERS #66, enter the dark heart of all that is where the battle to save the entire Multiverse is raging, featuring a cast of Avengers that staggers the imagination. Surely no foe from any universe would dare stand against such a force? Mephisto dares, as the full extent of his plan finally comes into shocking focus.

In AVENGERS FOREVER #15, the greatest battle in the history of the Multiverse continues to defy expectations as Avengers from throughout time and space, including countless different versions of Captain America and Iron Man and the God of Thunder, unite on the battlefield. Yet somehow, it all comes down to one Starbrand and one Ghost Rider, who unfortunately are the only Avengers whose powers don’t seem to be working…

“It feels good. It’s definitely the right time to bring this all crashing together and finish some of the character arcs that I’ve been building for years now,” Aaron told CBR in an exclusive interview. “We talked about what a big, epic, war story this is. It’s got a lot of different characters punching each other, and a lot of different versions of Avengers from throughout time and space. In the midst of all that though we have all the character moments, beats, and arcs that have been part of my run since issue #1. So, one of the goals is to make sure we don’t lose all of that amongst all the fighting, and crazy moments.

“There are some huge character beats to come at the end of this, and a lot of these characters are ones I’ve been working on in some form or another for more than a decade now. It does feel like the right time to wrap all of that up.”

That head shot cover really speaks to how removed I am from the comic Avengers.

I maybe recognize half the characters...

Nah, prehistoric Avengers doesn't cut it for me. There's Legacy heroes and then there's just Laziness.

I am really hoping this isnt what they're doing. The Sub-Mariner was their first superhero, and fundamentally changing him from an Atlantean to an Aztec just craps all over the writing and storyline done for him for the last 80 years. Its bad enough that they're doing it for the movies; doing it for the comics disrupts continuity not just for him, but a good deal of the Marvel Universe as a whole. Let the movies be their thing, the comics do THEIR thing.

I whole-heartedly agree

Is that Avenger Prime on the cover of #65? Looks a bit like Namor. Is this how the comics will re-write him into an Aztec? This is when the MCU synergy thing doesnt need to be a thing.

Aarons run had me interested enough to grab a few trades but I quickly lost interest. It ended up feeling worse than when Bendis threw in every big name into the Avengers. Fun for about a minute, then his shortcomings as a writer were on full display.

Bendis: who saysI cant write? Didnt you see how many characters I killed? Where were you when I ignored decades of continuity because it wouldnt fit into my current story?

F@%$ing hate that guy...

I expect that "Avenger Prime" is gonna turn out to be someone like Starbrand or Ghost Rider. A character that I don't care for, that shouldn't be an Avenger to begin with. I can't wait for this boring ass run to be finished. Thank the stars that Aaron is coming up on his home stretch. Hopefully, his successor will be someone who actually cares about classic Avengers characters and their lore. I'm tired of the current books kowtowing to MCU synergy and/or throwing crap at the wall to see who/what sticks. I don't want Nighthawk, Blade, Ghost Rider, Starbrand, etc. on the roster. It's time for characters like Wanda, Vision, Simon, Pietro, Clint etc. to return to the fold. Make the Avengers a classic flagship title again.

Yeah, you could probably take the word "Avengers" out of that statement and it still be accurate.

The really sad thing is I can't think of anyone who would actually do a better job. Dan Slott, Donny Cates? I guess it depends on whether you prefer clones or symbiotes.

To be honest I would go with someone like Al Ewing or Jim Zub, people who actually have a grasp on the Avengers and the Marvel Universe
