J. Michael Stracyznski Returns To Marvel In Captain America #1

Jay Cochran - June 02, 2023
Acclaimed writer and filmmaker J. Michael Stracyznski will make his celebrated return to Marvel Comics this September in CAPTAIN AMERICA #1! Stracyznski has written fan-favorite stories including AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and THOR, and now he’s ready to embark on a new adventure with Marvel’s star-spangled hero! Alongside superstar artist Jesús Saiz (PUNISHER, DOCTOR STRANGE), the talented duo is ready to take Steve Rogers on an exhilarating new adventure.

Decades ago, Steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now powerful and insidious forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present and future collide as the man out of time reckons with an existential threat determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost…

Straczynski says, “Overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve’s head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before. If folks like what I did with Peter in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and Thor in, well… THOR, then they should give this a shot, because I’m really swinging for the bleachers in this one!”

Check out the cover by Jesús Saiz below and don’t miss CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 when it hits stands in September!

I hope they let Steve be the only Captain America and let the Falcon go back to being himself by next year. The Falcon as Cap made sense when Steve asked him to stand in, now it doesn't. I want to see him back in his Falcon red and white, keep the red visor, and please give him his secret ID back. Let him parlay his social worker background into becoming an attorney with his own independent practice. No reason the Marvel Universe can't have another lawyer around.

Okay, after doing some research, it seems like BOTH current Captain America titles are coming to an end with the conclusion of Cold War. The upcoming Captain America #750 seems to be serving as a bookend finale to Sam Wilson's Symbol of Truth title. Which means that the brand new Captain America #1 (out in September) is going to be the ONLY Captain America book, and will hopefully carry Legacy Numbering #751 on the cover, restoring order to the universe as I know it.

Well at least they are cleaning up some of the confusion. Marvel tends to paint themselves into a corner when they have multiple heroes running around with the same code name.

It makes more sense with Miles Spidey but Marvel seems determined to forever intertwine Sam into Steve's legacy. Sure there is room for 2 Caps, but what bugs me is Sam is really the one short changed here. He is a great enough character to not have to be the 2nd or 3rd best Cap. He will no doubt get another chance to shine as Cap once his MCU movie hits but what will they do with Steve this time? How many times can they remove Steve from the equation? IMO it's only hurting both characters.

BTW: love the George Perez cover. It is bittersweet to see his art again because his work blew me away at multiple formative years as a comic collector. It's a bummer we will never see his art again but awesome to remember the great stories and visual treat his art was.

Because comic book continuity is a giant house of cards. If you acknowledge how long Steve has really been out of the ice (around 55 years, in our time) it begs the question why nobody else really seems to age. Same reason why Superman and Batman still appear to be in their mid-30's, when they should in reality each be closer to 110(ish) years old. They've always tried to stay away from referencing things that can pin-point specific dates, although it's sometimes unavoidable. Steve Rogers will always be treated as if he's only been out of the ice for a decade.

Not to mention when you factor in things like the characters having kids, and then the dilemma of having them grow up. Infant Franklin Richards graduating college and getting married and yet having the Human Torch still in his mid 20s gets harder and harder to justify lol.

Still why are they still see to be treating Steve as a Man out of time when he's been in the present day for rough 15 Marvel Years

I'm sure we all know what JMS will be writing in 1-2 years from now. Or at least I hope that he will be back on Spidey.

Funniest part is that OMD is not only time where JMS's original idea was changed by editorial. It's really the least offensive one too when you remember that JMS wanted Peter to have kids from Gwen in Sins Past story but "wise" editorial team at Marvel really though that Gwen cheating on Peter with Osborn and secretly giving birth to kids was better idea.... Hey at least it didn't make Peter seem old.... I'm so relived this offensive BS was retconned in Spencer's run.

Indeed.

Yeah, but isn't he also the same writer responsible for ""? That scares the hell out of me for Captain America.

I'm more wooried about him introducingtotemic forces into Cap's origin, so then marvel can have a Cap-Verse

Ha, ha! Right? It's like that Beatles conspiracy where they released 3 albums and a Christmas Album and toured America all within the length of a year and many years later when analysists took apart the schedule they figured they would have had to work like 358 days of the year on an average of 2 hours of sleep a night to have accomplished it. By todays standards of course. Still it was this crazy Herculean feat.

Completely off subject but it's one of those things that comes to mind every time a writer comes along and tries to shoehorn a bunch of other stuff in an already full history. Still I'm a fan of Straczynski and he is one of those writers that can create sensational stories without killing off or reinventing a character over and over.

and also, how many retconned flashbacks can you keep cramming into Captain America's history? It seems like they just keep coming up with more and more every single year, when he wasn't active for all that long before he went under the ice.
