Captain Marvel Dons A New Costume

Captain Marvel Dons A New Costume

Jay Cochran - June 17, 2023
This past week fans saw the end of Kelly Thompson’s historic run of CAPTAIN MARVEL, but you can’t keep Carol Danvers down for long! This October, enter an all-new era of CAPTAIN MARVEL as writer Alyssa Wong and Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Jan Bazaldua take the reins in a new ongoing series!

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 will mark a revolutionary shift for the iconic cosmic hero as she gets a glow-up courtesy of superstar artist Jen Bartel! Bartel’s recent Hellfire Gala design for Carol was a hit with fans, and now she’s delivered a sleeker, modified version for Carol’s new journey. In addition, CAPTAIN MARVEL will see the rise of a new overwhelming omniversal entity who recognizes Carol is the only hero who can stand against its’ vision of total annihilation. After being ambushed and trapped, Carol will need to rely on the reluctant help of a young ally who holds the key to victory! Ripe with high-stakes adventure, cosmic mystery, and epic feats, it’s an exciting new status quo worthy of Marvel’s brightest stars!

HIGHEST, FURTHEST, FASTEST! Carol Danvers is one of the powerhouses of the Marvel Universe, a woman capable of harnessing the energy of the sun. So if you’re coming for Earth? She’s the first one you take off the board. Someone’s figured just how to do just that. Introducing a new supporting cast and villains both beloved and dangerously fresh as Wong and Bazaldua’s exhilarating new series kicks off!

“I'm so excited to be writing Captain Marvel!” Wong said. “Carol is such an iconic character with a rich history, and I can't wait to add to her story. It's an honor to work with Jan and I hope everyone enjoys what we've got coming!”

“Captain Marvel is one of my favorite female characters, that's why I'm very excited to draw her,” Bazaldua added. “I have always seen her as a very self-confident woman with nothing she cannot face, and not just because she has superpowers, but because she has inner strength. That’s what I really enjoy about her and why I really appreciate this opportunity!”

Check out Stephen Segovia’s cover for issue one now and stay tuned for more announcements about CAPTAIN MARVEL such as new character designs and variant covers, including a special foil cover and John Tyler Christopher's negative space cover!

I can kinda understand people not fond of the overall aesthetic of the costume, but the opposition to there being a jacket at all is deeply confusing. So many other superheroes, especially those with very physical fighting styles, have worn jackets, and yet this is the first time people say it's impractical?

I don't think it's so much that the jacket is impractical, its more that its impractical for Her. In the '30s-'40s it was common to see men dressed in suits and ties and fedoras, topped off with capes, going into action. Its impractical, but it fit the era. And certain outfits just go with certain characters; when I see this jacket, not only does it give off drum major vibes...it looks like something a teenager would wear. It's not "wrong", it's just looks wrong for Carol. Dept of Defense Security Manager, USAF fighter pilot, galactic superhero....nah, this woman is at least 30. Can't see her wearing this.

I'd love to think this was a clever way to get Carol back into her older iconic costume but I just don't think todays writers are that clever. It would be a smooth way to pull it off though.

It was a very bad idea.

It was about 10 years ago. Power Girl got a new costume and every issue it would be completely destroyed until eventually she was back in her iconic look.

Oh wow. Was that a thing already? With Power Girl I can only imagine what the issue was with her costume being destroyed. Probably something that would be frowned upon in this day. Never been a big DC fan. They do an occasional movie okay. Like both Suicide Squads but overall from the movies to the comics to the action figures they are the inferior of the two companies. DC does have the better traditionally animated movies and televison. For whatever that is worth.

LOL. Truth be told I guess you, I and pretty much anyone else on this board are about as qualified to speak on what superheroes wear to fight aliens in space as any fashion designer turned comic artist and all we would all have different opinions on the details. But can we at least all come together and agree it is pretty darn UGLY? And honestly as I think @TheArrowpoints out it was easy for Jen Bartel to tap into her talent and design the darn thing but any poor artist who gets tasked with the book is going to have an aneurysm trying to illustrate that crazy thing from panel to page in each issue. And we all know these days a new comic run always comes with some new fantastic powers so I wonder if her new power will be a Cosmic Trombone.

Artist will always change things to suit their own style and keep it simple. That's why very few artist drew Wanda's Wada Tiara correctly.

True. The artists of today have a lot more tools at their disposal to deal with smaller details and if they get in a pinch the jacket can always removed or destroyed at anytime. Maybe they can make it a running joke that her jacket gets destroyed all the time during a fight. Maybe they can give her some impressive guns underneath. Losing the jacket is a theme all in itself.

The design can easily be broken up in simpler shapes. Most details are angled lines, which makes it even easier to reproduce. And even then, not every panel needs to have the same level of detail.

Plus, if you take away the jacket, her costume is even simpler than her current one, which has a lot more seam lines and panelling. The jacket being the way it is even makes it easier to draw, since there's a lot less wrinkles to convey than, say, a bomber jacket.

Jan Bazaldua can easily handle it, plus it's not like she's being tasked to draw an Iron Man armor. Now thosecan get complex.

I think the issue is about whether you approach costumes from a functional or aesthetic starting point. Because you're giving consideration to how it would actually feel to wear and move in whereas I'm just like baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn.
