Derrick Chew's Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #1 Cover Spotlights Kamala Khan's New Role As A Member Of The X-Men

Jay Cochran - January 29, 2024
This March, Kamala Khan returns to Jersey City as a full-fledged member of the X-Men in MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE!

A sequel to last year’s acclaimed Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant limited series, MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE will once again be written by Marvel Studios’ own Ms. Marvel, actress Iman Vellani, and writer Sabir Pirzada. Joining them this time around will be artist Scott Godlewski, who recently made his Marvel Comics debut in the Fall of X tie-in series Alpha Flight.

MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE sees Kamala continue to adjust to her mutant identity as she makes her way back home following her explosive first mission with the X-Men. Discovering she was a mutant during the fall of Krakoa has proven to be quite the challenge and in order to survive the experience, she’ll have to learn how to balance her family and friends with her new X-Men responsibilities—including singlehandedly taking down iconic X-villain Mojo!

The highly-anticipated debut issue will sport a stunning variant by best-selling cover artist Derrick Chew. Also available as a virgin variant cover, the piece shows Kamala rocking her new X-costume, ready to protect a world that hates and fears her!

Ms. Marvel has officially come out to the world as a mutant and a member of the X-Men…and she’s about to learn just how hard things can get for mutantkind! Kamala Khan is used to being a hometown hero – there’s no way her community would turn on her just because she’s a mutant, right? …Right??

Check out Chew’s cover and preorder MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE #1 at your local comic shop today!

because she is popular. I'm tired of people who keep saying she is not. If she wasn't they wouldn't be pushing her. Marvel is all about money. If she wasn't selling, they wouldn't keep pushing her.

I'm sorry, but, no. If she was as popular as they want us to believe she is, she would be able to sustain her own ongoing book. She can't. That's why they've resorted to the mini-series model with Kamala. If it's a planned five-issue run, it can't be cancelled the way it could if it were an ongoing series, and that way they don't have to worry about losing face, or admitting that the character isn't as popular as they're telling us she is.

Now that she's a mutant, I wish they'd forget about her and let her fade into the background, like Pixie, or Beak. She's obviously not interesting enough to support her own ongoing series, so why do they feel the need to push her so hard towards the readers? Having the publishers running around screaming "She's popular! She's popular!" doesn't actually make her popular. It's kinda like when a Facebook group I used to frequent tried to make Darkhawk popular a couple years back. They pushed so hard that they were actually able to ironically drive up the price of his #1 from the early 90's, at least temporarily.

There's probably a little truth the the rise in popularity of the character. But really it's mostly that Marvel/Disney way of playing the numbers. In the absence of talent of the writers to actually come up with new ideas and characters that are actually popular the default has just become to just declare a character popular and hope that it catches on and people start to buy the comic by the word of mouth. Originated by the writers themselves mind you. But let's not dally on the details. How long has Marvel been pushing the whole Now More Popular Than Ever line for Captain Marvel? Just for the simple fact that she got much more exposure in the MCU and consequently is most likely a bit more popular than she was before she appeared in the MCU. Still not a popular character in perspective to other really popular characters but at it's base that is probably a true statement. That's the numbers game Disney has been playing by for years. I'd say Kamala is in a somewhat similar situation. I'd say simply due to the fact that she's now part of the Mutant population in the Marvel universe I would think that her popularity numbers have seen at least a small boost but yes acting like suddenly she's wildly popular is a bit of a stretch. One of the better characters to make it out of that whole ANAD debacle possibly but that's not saying much.

To be honest I am still thinking Kamala's mutant powers will be her MCU powers.

With all the "synergy" gripes, I thought they'd give her the purple latern powers of the show and movie with this "massive change." Overall, I think she's fine as an X character. A likeable character who hangs out with a different set of friends now is the only real difference.

Yeah, Tom is taking over in the new year.

Indeed, but that could change now that TomBrevoort is going to be X-Men editor and apparently might be retconning people into mutants

Yup, that's the main thing I hated too. Just because Fox owned the movie rights so the comics shied away from the X-Men and tried to push the Inhumans. Sad since X-Men had been one of the main sellers for the comics up until that point.

I don't mind them not being Magneto's children, it did nothing for them. I hated that they are no longer mutants, just because Magneto isn't their dad anymore.
