Daredevil #8 Marks 60 Fearless Years Of Daredevil

Jay Cochran - March 24, 2024
In April 1964, fans witnessed the birth of a new super hero icon in Stan Lee and Bill Everett’s Daredevil #1, and in the six decades since, the Man Without Fear has headlined some of the most acclaimed runs in Marvel Comics history. This April, celebrate the character’s incredible legacy with DAREDEVIL #8. In addition to ta main story continuing Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder’s hit run, the special super-sized issue will be packed with guest talent, including legendary creators from Daredevil’s history!

Ahmed and Kuder’s DAREDEVIL finds Matt balancing his new duties as a Catholic Priest with an ongoing war against mysterious demonic entities targeting those close to him. After discovering that the demons are the living embodiment of his own seven deadly sins, Matt and Elektra are ready to go on the offensive. In DAREDEVIL #8, the duo finally confront the unsettling truth of the mysterious new gang terrorizing Hell’s Kitchen. In the midst of that chaos, an old foe with the blood of Matt’s closest allies on his hands returns and ushers in the next phase of what’s shaping up to be one of the most thought-provoking and pulse-pounding Daredevil eras ever!

Fans can also look forward to these other stories:

· Ahmed teams up with rising star Tommaso Bianchi (Alien: Black, White & Blood) showcase why Elektra is truly a woman without fear as she single-handedly goes up against a whole army of the Heat on a daring rescue mission!

· Return to the 80s with visionary Daredevil scribe Ann Nocenti and acclaimed Marvel artist Stefano Rafaelle as they present a vintage flashback adventure of Daredevil taking down Turk and his fellow mobsters within the confines of a steamy bath house.

· Daredevil: Gang War writer Erica Schultz and Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Jan Bazaldua spotlight Elektra’s current role as mentor to Alice, her young ward from Chip Zdarsky’s Eisner-nominated run!

· Women of Marvel writer Elsa Sjunnerson and artist Erica Koda show how Matt Murdock inspires generations—both in and out of costume!

· Daredevil: Black Armor writer D.G. Chichester and superstar artist Ken Lashley bring you a never-before-told showdown between Daredevil and the Punisher set during Chichester’s landmark ‘90s run.

· And Ty Templeton delivers more of his iconic Daily Bugle funnies!

Wow. Looking back at my own notes I don't believe I ever called any of it horrible. Just felt some of the things they've done to this character in absence of actually writing cool adventures is a shame. I still maintain I'd rather see a hero kick butt in a hero comic rather than reading a daytime soap opera drama in comic form. Just two different types of entertainment. One of them I'm not so fond of. The other one has its fans as well.

If you weren't implying the last +10 years of Daredevil weren't beyond appalling and damaging you wouldn't have suggested that some of his classic creators would've "bowed out after seeing what's been done to the character." It doesn't feel like you're alluding to just "some of the things." As if anything else would cause something like that. I think the plausible deniability of "I didn't say those exact words verbatim" is better suited for a court (heh, speaking of Daredevil...)

You mean horrible stufff like... [checks notes] Mark Waid's critically acclaimed run between 2011-2015? Wait, no, that can't be right... you have to be alluding to something like the incomprehensible monstrosity of... [checks notes] a just-as-praised run by Chip Zdarsky between 2019-2023?

I mean, lol, even Charles Soule's 2015-2018 run that is sandwiched between those two titans and wasn't as beloved is universally regarded as fine. Or did you say 15 years specifically so you could allude to Shadowland which happened in 2009-2010 as if that single story that's been mostly swept under the rug has enough weight to sully everything overwhelmingly positive that has come since 2011?

So after years of getting smacked around by average street thugs he's back to fighting demons and taking out entire gangs and even pre-neutered Punisher shows up again. I hear in #7 he's back to being good enough to take on Wolverine again. Not that I'm not happy to hear it but where has this DD been for like the last 10 years? I guess all those years of soul-searching just didn't sell the books like they expected them to.

I hear that. Though Marvel tries to act like they have the utmost respect for DD he is the perpetual Stepchild. There's always some other story or some other event that puts him at second fiddle. Right now amidst the so called reboot of X-Mania this just seems like an afterthought. Then again maybe some of those people you named may have bowed out after seeing what's been done to the character over the last 15 years or so.

I mean, Romita has been doing covers. And I don't think Mazzuchelli does comics anymore, so I don't feel that's the case. I think Marvel just didn't wanna pay for A-List artists.

Yeah, I mean, personally I didn't care for those runs, but I would not classify them as "horrible stuff" either.

I just feel Marvel didn't try this time...or even don't try when it comes to anniversary specials. "Should we hire [insert A-list artist here] to draw this anniversary special?"

"Nah, the Anniversary hoopla will sell the issue regardless of who's drawing it!"

I expected more legendary artists in the tales. Romita Jr, Mazzuchelli, even Weeks or McDaniel. Kinda disappointing.
