Ray Winstone Wanted Out From Filming Marvel's Black Widow

Outsiders - February 29, 2024
Ray Winstone, who was recently seen in Marvel's Black Widow, a film released in 2021 that starred Scarlett Johansson in the main role, expressed his dissatisfaction with his involvement in the Marvel production.

In an exclusive interview with Radio Times magazine, Winstone candidly shared his thoughts on portraying the film's antagonist, the Russian general Dreykov.

"It was fine until you have to do the reshoots," he said. "Then you find out that a few producers have come down, and your performance is too much, it’s too strong… That’s the way Marvel works. It can be soul-destroying because you feel like you’re doing great work."

The actor revealed he was ready to give up on the project altogether: "I actually said, 'You ought to recast it because that was it for me.' And you end up doing it again because you’re contracted to do it. Otherwise you end up in court. It’s like being kicked in the balls."

Lol. I bet he wishes he got out while the getting was bad. Then it got worse. I have watched this movie several times and I still do on occasion because ScarJo is still an Empress of BA and I really love Florence. It had Red Guardian. It had some good action scenes. It had some decent funny dialog. And most of all it had the beautiful magnificent born to play Betsy Braddock in her younger days Rachel Weisz. But the movie is just such a frustrating let down. It's like 2 different movies. The first 3/4 of it had the makings of another Marvel Studios banger and then the "reveal" happens and it just takes a cringy head shaking crazy turn to cuckooville and everything good about it up to that point gets thrown in the garbage shoot.

It's just mind boggling how off the rails it goes. You know what it's like? It's like someone gave the writers a list of all the elements they wanted put into the movie but somehow they managed to make a decent movie using only 30 percent of those elements but then tried to cram the last 70 percent into the final act of the movie. And it turn into illogical incomprehensible jumbled mess at the end that almost made you sorry you had not better spent your time watching the grout dry around the base of your bathtub. I reminds me of that silly but awesome old song by Merle Haggard where he thought he wrote the perfect country song but after a friend pointed out all the things he forgot to put in it he tried to jam them all into the last verse. But unlike BWidow the song turned out good. And legendary. I think it's called Never Even Called Me By My Name. If you never heard it it's worth a lesson. You can thank me later.

Marvel Studios is about a hairs-breath from becoming Warner Bros studios.Their first dozen or so films did great business because they let the filmmakers make their movies. They understood the material and they went ahead with it.After Endgame, and the billion+ dollar box office, all everyone sees with marvel is dollar signs. That is a kiss-of-death......or at least a nasty injury to the brand. It's not about entertainment so much anymore, as it is about making bank. And that trickles down to the soundstage. They need to unclench.
